Carbonia is mainly known for its
origins as a planned town founded in 1938, and for its history
interwoven with the exploitation of its coal mines.
The pits were closed in 1964, and then completely abandoned, and
left in ruins. thanks to substantial financian founding from
European Union, the mineral deposit site is now undergoing extensive
restructuring and reutilization work.It will become the headquarter
of the Italian Centre of Coal Culture (CICC) and from spring 2006 it
will be used for cultural, tourist, teaching and scientific purposes.
A lesser known fact is perhaps the enormous wealth of the
archaeological landscapes characterizing its territory: It's so rich
that has brought into being a museum network consisting of the
Archaeologial Museum of Villa Sulcis and the Museum of Plaeontology
and Speleology "E. A. Martel" the Archaeologial Park of Monte
Sirai, as well as the Nuraghe Sirai and the hypogeal necropolis of
Cannas di Sopra.
Moreover the near by plateau of Monte Sirai offers a complete
picture of the Phoenician and Punic civilization in Sardinia.
Visitors can easily enjoi visiting the whole settlement, founded by
the Phoenician around to 750 B.C.: it consist of a dwelling, two
Phoenician and Punic necropolises and the Tofet. This is mainly
because, only case in Sardinia, its structures haven't had the
chance to suffer from restyling or laiding upon housing in the
following periods of history.
From Monte Sirai visitors and tourist can also anjoi a landscape of
beauty comprising the two island of Sant'Antioco and Carloforte.
Those who are more interested in the more recent history of the
area should spend some time in the town which is a rare example of
the rationalist architecture of 1900s. Pay particular attention to
Rome square around Whith some very important building are found: the
Town Hall, St Ponziano's churc, the very earliest church in town,
the Civic Tower, the after work club, now
used as seat of the
meetings of the local Council, and the town teatre. Climbin the hill
of Monte Rosmarino, now a beautiful park covered with pine wood and
the typical Mediterranean maquis/scrubs, visitors can observe the
austere urban design of Carbonia, where curved lines harmonize with
the regularity and the symmetry of the blocks of building.
As a culturally lively small town, very frequently involved in
sport events, Carbonia can boast some important structures like the
town Teatre, open air amphiteatres, a very important library endowed
with a lot of useful services, a multimedia library, exhibition hall
or galleries, conference halls, a spread network of sports services
and centres: among them an that is a multifunctional sport Centre.
Thanks to its central position in the territory visitors can reach
the sea very easily; to most of the seaside destinations it takes
them just 15 minutes!
